Make A Custom Home Building Checklist!

If you are in the process of building the home of your dreams, you should definitely make a custom home building checklist! There are a lot of small things to think about when building your future home, and making a checklist allows you to go over those things with a fine-toothed comb. Having a custom home building checklist of your own allows you to deal with these issues when they arise. If you’re one to sweat too much over the little things, having a custom home building checklist is even more important for working on your house.

Designer Homes FM has provided a list of some things you should add to your custom home building checklist – here at Designer Homes, we ask for your input on these things before we begin the process of building your dream home.

1. Lights, Switches, and Power Outlets

When Designer Homes FM is working on your house, we check the location of lights, switches, and power outlets to ensure that no inconvenient placement exists. Mistakes happen, but they are corrected before they cause an issue with the process of building your custom home. Take specific notes regarding the placement of power outlets outside the home.

Taking notes on the placement of lights, switches, and power outlets will allow you to deal with any issues regarding their functionality when they come up. Keep in mind the level of outdoor decorating you’d like to think about when building your custom home!

2. Shower Head Height

Here’s something to think about when building your custom home – if anyone in your family is 6’ or taller, you’ll need to make sure the showerhead fitting is 6’8” in order to ensure that the showerhead is a comfortable 6’5” to accommodate everyone in your home.

3. Television Placement

It’s important to think about television placement when building your custom home. Designer Homes FM will help you identify every location in your home where you might want to put a television and make sure that power outlets are present in those rooms.

If you’re looking to install a heavier TV monitor in a specific location, Designer Homes FM will provide added reinforcement for your television stand in the form of two 2 x 10 or 2 x 12 wooden pieces running between the studs of your monitor. These wooden rods are meant to bolster both the existing physical reinforcement of the TV stand and the ease with which screws can be drilled in the mounting bracket for further physical reinforcement backup.

4. Water Heater Placement

Designer Homes FM has decades of experience with building homes, and we know that installing water heaters in the attic allows you to free up space in your garage. However, we also would like you to consider the storage space that your water heaters will take up in the attic! You’ll also have to try to get the best water line fittings you can find in order to protect your home from any kind of water heater rupture in your attic.

If you don’t have lots of space that needs to be occupied, you could try using tankless water heaters (which are more expensive but smaller and save on energy costs).

5. Attic Storage

Designer Homes FM will automatically install decking in your accessible attic space. However, some builders will not automatically install decking in your attic space and may even deny access to attic space in the final custom home plan.

However, if accessible attic space is a priority for you and you’re not using Designer Homes FM to build the custom home of your dreams, you should talk to your custom home builder about specific custom home plans that allow for the automatic installation of decking, a light with an accessible switch, and doors/pull-downs to gain access into usable attic space.

6. Shelf Depth

Shelf depth is something else to think about when building your custom home. By default, your existing shelves will have a depth of 11-12 inches. Designer Homes FM gains your input on preferred shelf depth before beginning the process of building your shelves. In order to gain a bit of extra utility, consider talking to your home builder about increasing the depth of your shelves to 14-15 inches. This makes it easy to get the most out of your available storage space.

7. Door Swing Direction

Designer Homes FM checks the way and direction each door opens in order to ensure that directional consistency is maintained throughout the home and logical door hinge usage is prioritized. If there are two doors on perpendicular walls that interfere with each other when both are opened at the same time, Designer Homes FM deals with these issues when they come up.

8. Extra Materials

Designer Homes FM provides you with a leftover set of each type of tile, carpet, wallpaper, brick, trim, paint, and grout that you may need for conducting future repairs of your custom home. After receiving these items, you should make it a priority to catalog the manufacturer and product description of each item in case you need more than the leftover number of extra materials. Talk to your home builder about doing the same.
