The City of Fargo is currently developing a master plan for Island Park, a public park at 302 Seventh St. South. Furthermore, the park’s name is derived from the fact that it was originally a planned townsite by the Northern Pacific Railroad. The city was reluctant to use the land for a park, but two Fargo citizens intervened and deeded it, and the land was eventually donated to the city. The park features a statue of Henrik Wergeland, who was a national poet and a symbol of Norway’s independence. He also reforms the laws of the state, agriculture, and prisons, and is credited with making May 17 a holiday in Norway.
